The SKY MISSION model “AROUND THE SKY”,
developed in a joint venture between Principal Home and architect Shin Takamatsu,
received the Good Design Award for 2017.
The Good Design Award, which succeeded the “Good Design Product Selection System” (commonly known as the G Mark System) established by the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1957, is the only comprehensive design evaluation and recommendation movement in Japan.
Despite the simple exterior, the design creates a richly diverse interior space. The courtyard, offering views of the sky that reflect the changing seasons, brings a rich sense of time into the house. The courtyard creates a feeling of spaciousness and circulatory movement that transcends the building area, and it is easy to imagine various relaxed and lively scenes of everyday life being played out here. The house is also endowed with universal appeal as a residential prototype.
With a bold sky court positioned in the center, the residence is designed so that natural light is always incorporated into the living space.
Moreover, the overhead bridge not only makes it possible to enjoy walking in the air, but it also broadens the practical lines for living.
The exterior-facing louvers alleviate the sense of enclosure while enhancing the design and privacy.
The jet-black exterior is evocative of a black shrine, shutting out any relationship with the outside world while fostering a sense of kinship and confrontation with the enclosed sky.
Like lovers frolicking on the summer seashore
Like girls playing rondos quietly in the sun
Here, the sky weaves the traces of time punctuating everyday activities
A house that seems to surround the sky while being enveloped by the sky
A house that seems to surround the sky while being blessed by the sky
That is AROUND THE SKY
